Do you want to share and explain things you know the most? One of the easiest ways to share your expertise is by starting a blog in your niche.
You might be wondering: why would you want to start a blog when there are other avenues to use?
Well, two reasons.
First, setting up a blog doesn’t cost you brick and mortar. There are so many web hosting providers out there that offer you to (for the very least) pay a monthly fee to host your site, which tends to be affordable.
Second, apart from sharing your expertise, you can also take advantage of monetizing your blog. Whether you want to offer freelance services or promoting products through affiliate links, there are endless ways you can get yourself handsome money. At the same time, you share something super useful to your audience.
With that said,
Is blogging easy?
You may assume that starting a blog seems hard to set up, especially if you are a complete newbie. But with the right strategy and actionable steps to set up a blog site and write blog posts, blogging can be a profitable endeavor.
Think of your blog as an asset, in which it is a way to share your expertise while being able to monetize it passively. Yup, you read that right: passively. If you recall my previous post (read my post here if you haven’t yet), an asset is anything that brings you income, even better if it brings you passive income.
Here’s a simple test: if you can let your hands off your blog for a few days and still be able to earn income throughout those days, congratulations!
How much does it cost to start a blog?
This is my most favorite question!
If you start a business that sells products or services physically, there are a lot of costs to consider, and they can be prohibitively expensive for a start.
Just a disclaimer: this post contains affiliate or referral links. This means I may earn a commission should you choose to sign up for a program or make a purchase using my link at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much!
However, starting a blog from scratch is so cheap. Yes, not expensive at all! Let me break down the cost further below:
- Buying a domain name through Namecheap: $8.88 per year.
- Purchasing a web host through SiteGround: $3.95 per month (psst! I found a better deal. If you sign up for a premium shared hosting through Hostinger at $2.89 per month, you will also get a free domain! How awesome is that?!).
- Installing a WordPress theme: FREE! Simply choose from thousands of free themes and install it instantly (or if you prefer more customization options and can customize your page on the front-end, I absolutely recommend using Divi theme).
- SSL certificate: FREE!
- That’s it!
In total, you may need to pay around as low as $2.89 per month or higher than that if you need more storage space and additional features offered there.
That’s a pretty low cost to set up a blog, and if your web host allows creating an unlimited amount of websites, you can even set up other kinds of sites, including landing pages. With a single web hosting plan, you can create multiple websites that can potentially bring you income, literally from various sources (your websites)!
Talk about income,
How do bloggers get paid?
Good question. You may think that it is hard, if not impossible, to monetize your blog. After all, how can you earn income from your blog?
Well, it’s possible to monetize your blog if you know what you are doing.
There are a number of ways to get your blog monetized and earn some dollars along the way.
Putting the affiliate links in your blog posts, displaying ads on multiple locations within your site, offering freelance services, creating and promoting your online course, and many more methods.
If you intend to share a product on your blog with affiliate links, make sure you know its benefits and how it can help your audience relate to their problems. If you want to put advertisements around your site, make sure they don’t annoy your readers while scrolling through it.
Long story short, choices are endless!
Is starting a blog worth it?
Absolutely! As long as you know how to monetize your blog and be creative with sharing and promoting your content, you are further stepping ahead to not only helping your audience but also earning income regardless of whether you do your work.
How do you start a blog for beginners?
Feeling overwhelmed with how to start one? Don’t worry, it is pretty straightforward and here is how you can too:
Get your domain name.
It is up to you on how you would decide the name for your domain. But don’t take too long to choose the name until you are not completing the other steps!
I personally use Namecheap to register my domain. However, if you are just starting out, you may want to get your domain along with the hosting. I would personally recommend Hostinger (which I currently use) since it costs as low as $2.89 per month for unlimited website hosting plus free domain registration!
Get your web host
Once you have the domain name ready, you would want to get a web host so that you can start hosting your website straight away.
As I mentioned before, if you sign up through Hostinger, you can get both the web hosting and a free domain for only $2.89 per month. Score!
Install WordPress and a WordPress theme
Once you get your domain set up on your web host, install WordPress onto your domain.
Its because compared to other content management systems (CMS), WordPress provides more options on how you want to customize plus no restrictions on the way you want to display ads or other monetization methods within your site.
Normally, the WordPress installation can be done within your web hosting dashboard so you don’t have to manually upload the WordPress files and install from scratch.
Also, don’t forget to select your desired theme for your site.
There are thousands of WordPress themes you can choose from on the WordPress backend. If you don’t care much about the advanced customization or undecided on a theme, you can install the free one. You can also find thousands of free WordPress themes if you do a Google search.
Once you get the hang of it, you may want to switch to other themes for better layout and customization, for instance.
I use Divi since it offers a lot of customization plus the ability to edit the pages directly on the front-end through the Divi’s visual builder. Also, you get the shots on how you want to decide on the page and site layouts with simple drag and drop.
(Get the Divi theme at just $89/year, and you are free to customize your site as much as you want!)
Configure the pages you want to include
You may want to, say, post the FAQs as well as the contact page. Whatever pages you wish to include, make sure it is relevant to your blog and your site in general.
Creating a page on WordPress is super simple. Just click the “Pages” tab and then “Add new.”
Plan your blog posts
I’m sure you already have some topics in mind to write your blog posts. But, you do need to plan on what to write, the time allocated for writing, the outline of each blog post, how many posts you want to publish each day, and if you are going to include affiliate links into the posts.
Either way, it is crucial to plan so that you won’t be getting overwhelmed.
Most importantly, start writing!
Don’t overthink your draft or outline! Just start writing! Don’t be afraid of other people’s judgment or anyone who thinks that your blog is terrible.
When you are starting out, it is easy to get ourselves discouraged and perhaps thinking that there are other blogs out there that performed better.
You have to start somewhere. The most important thing is you do the writing, regardless of your writing quality is okay or not.
How do I get visitors to my blog?
There are a number of ways to get traffic through your blog.
You can use social media to share and promote your blog posts.
You can even republish your posts on sites like LinkedIn and Medium for more prominent exposure.
Also, you may want to consider guest posting and let readers know about you and your blog.
I did write about the ways to get the right traffic, which you can read right here.
How do I make my blog searchable?
Of course, setting up your blog is a way to ensure Google gets to recognize your website’s existence. But to get your blog posts searchable, keyword research is the key. You have to make sure that your blog posts are exactly what your audience is searching for.
To wrap up
Starting a blog is one of the best ways to get yourself out there and show you the world you know about certain things.
It can be discouraging to start one, but believe me that when you managed to get past through your fears and start taking action, you will be able to get the hang of it as time passes by.
